Adding 30 minutes of Daily Physical Activity Should Top New Year's Resolutions List

Peter Brubaker, Director of Healthy Exercise and Lifestyle Programs (HELPS) at Wake Forest University¹ in Winston-Salem, NC, offers ten [health] tips to get moving in 2010²:

1. Set a goal of 30 minutes a day of physical activity. It doesn't need to be all at once. Five minutes here, 10 minutes there is fine. As long as it is done at moderate intensity, you will get sufficient health benefits.


2. Walk. For most people, the easiest and most efficient activity is simply walking.


3. Wear a pedometer. Recent studies have shown that people wearing pedometers increase their activity level by 25 percent.


4. Build activity into your daily routine. Get up from your desk to deliver a message. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Add some extra steps when you are doing household chores. Find small ways to get moving.


5. Record daily physical activity in a journal. Self-monitoring is important when making a lifestyle change and journaling activity levels can be good reinforcement.


6. Don't worry so much about weight loss. If you are regularly active you can get significant health benefits even if you never lose a pound. People serious about weight loss should build in 60 minutes per day of physical activity.


7. Find activities you enjoy and feel good about doing. Try a variety of activities. Variety is good for the body — and the mind.


8. Get the support of friends and family. Challenge them to add 30 minutes of physical activity to their daily routine, and you can hold each other accountable.


9. Set realistic expectations. The biggest obstacle to successful lifestyle change is expectation. People are unrealistic about what they can achieve and how quickly they can achieve it.


10. Don't emphasis Jan. 1 too much. There is a risk in building up expectations that you'll make a change just because it's the start of the new year. Any time of year is a good time to make a commitment to change your lifestyle.

What is Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Gastric bypass surgery makes the stomach smaller and allows food to bypass part of the small intestine. You will feel full more quickly than when your stomach was its original size, which reduces the amount of food you eat and thus the calories consumed.

Bypassing part of the intestine also results in fewer calories being absorbed. This leads to weight loss. The most common gastric bypass surgery is a Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass.

What is Lap-Band System Surgery?

Approved by the FDA in June 2001, LAP-BAND System is the safest, least invasive and only adjustable surgical treatment for morbid obesity in the United States. It induces weight loss by reducing the capacity of the stomach, which restricts the amount of food that can be consumed.Since its clinical introduction in 1993, over 200,000 LAP-BAND procedures have been performed around the world.

"Lap-Band System" is the brand name of the FDA-approved, adjustable gastric band used in the procedure. A Lap-Band is a silicone belt that goes around the top of the stomach. This results in the ability to control your hunger and achieve a "feeling of fullness," or satiety. Ultimately, you eat much less and should feel full sooner.

A key component of the Lap-Band System is its adjustability. The band is connected to a port, which enables the device to be inflated over time to expedite the weight loss.
