Senator Robert Clegg, R-Hudson, won final approval of legislation that compels insurers to cover weight-loss surgery that is medically necessary1.
Earlier this month, The House of Representatives approved the Senate-passed bill (SB 312) by a vote of 209-139.
Clegg, a GOP candidate for Congress, lost more than 105 pounds after having the procedure in September. He had to pay out of pocket more than $20,000 after his insurer denied to cover it.
"I was really surprised the House went along with it and gratified by the vote," Clegg said during an interview.
Soon the bill (SB 312) will go to the desk of Governor John Lynch who has yet to decide if he can support it, according to Press Secretary Colin Manning.
